Introduction to Bushcraft Day on the stunning Mawddach estuary, Dolgellau.

Join us for Bushcraft, Nature awareness and Wilderness skills in our Autumnal wildwood venue. Come for a full day session (with a break for lunch) and get the skills to get out there, including-

Vital Bushcraft

All the vital Bushcraft skills for outdoor living.

A packed day that’s practical, fun and inspiring, in the safe hands of a qualified and experienced Firefox Bushcraft guide. Suitable for beginners and those that want to get the basics right.

2012 Dates – May 19th, June 9th, July 7th.

Duration – 9am to 5pm with wild camping overnight option.

Cost – £80-00 per person including lunch.

Overnight with breakfast is an additional £25 per person.

Location - Mawddach Estuary, near Barmouth and Dolgellau, Gwynedd, within Snowdonia National Park.Meeting point-

Pick-ups can be arranged from Dolgellau bus station or Barmouth and Morfa Mawddach railway stations- please arrange with us.

We will cover

  • Firecraft - friction fire-lighting and firesteel training, tinders and fire-building principles.
  • Knife skills - safe and sound tool use (inc. saws), making useful woodcraft items.
  • Water strategy - finding and making water safe to drink.
  • Campfire cooking - creating a ‘woodsman’s kitchen’ and recipes from the pioneers.
  • Plant-lore - wildfoods, purposeful plants and trees, their uses and folklore.
  • Sheltercraft - vital rope-work, debris shelters and bashas and hammocks.
  • Nature awareness skills - getting closer to Wild Wales with wildlife tracking and field skills.

The day includes a simple lunch and great views from the wooded slopes of the Snowdonia Mountains.

Wild camping overnight option- put your new-found skills to the test with a night out in a hammock (bring a sleeping bag and mat- kit list provided with bookings) and a well-earned full campfire breakfast at 7:30am, finish for 8:30 am.

Woodcrafty weekends

an exploration of Bushcraft and woodcraft skills

Firefox course tutor Heath Dawson, (NCFE Bushcraft and Outdoor leadership).

A deeper exploration of Bushcraft living and woodcraft skills with a seasonal focus on useful plants.

A full yet relaxed weekend that’s hands on and inspirational (with a bit of space to immerse yourself in the Natural world).

Suitable for those with a little Bushcraft experience and an interest in working with Nature to create craft items with form and function.

2012 Dates:

  • Birch Woodcrafty Weekend 17th-18th March
  • Hazel Woodcrafty Weekend 21rd-22th April
  • Willow Woodcrafty Weekend 5th May-6th May
  • Ash Woodcrafty Weekend 26th-27th May
  • Oak Woodcrafty Weekend 7th-8th July

Duration - 9am Saturday morning to 4:30pm Sunday afternoon.

Cost - £150 per person including food and materials.

We will cover:

  • Primitive firecraft - making your own friction fire-lighting set to keep and appropriate tinders and fire-lays to use with it.
  • Knife skills - safe and sound tool use (inc. saws), creative woodcraft, making more tools or useful items from natural resources.
  • Campfire cooking - an exploration of native woods as fuel along with their burning properties. Waughan sticks and pothangers and campfire cooking.
  • Plant-lore - an in-depth look at purposeful plants and trees, their uses and folklore. Wildfood foraging techniques.
  • Sheltercraft - vital rope-work for setting up your overnight tarp and hammock. Tips for a good night’s kip.
  • Cordage, containers and glues - storage and binding materials from Nature.

The weekend includes food, your very own woodcraft items, good company and great views from the wooded slopes of the Snowdonia Mountains. Bring a sleeping bag and mat, (a full kit list is provided with booking confirmation).

We aim to finish for 4:30 pm Sunday.

Bushcraft Professional Development Courses

Take yourself seriously and raise the standard of your Wilderness skills with a professional development course in Bushcraft and Nature awareness with Firefox Bushcraft.

Dates - Two consecutive days with overnight in June 2012.

Duration - from 9am to 4:30pm next day.

Cost - £160 food and certificate provided.

Location - Mawddach Estuary, Dolgellau, Gwynedd, within Snowdonia National Park. Pick ups can be arranged from Barmouth and Morfa Mawddach railway stations- please arrange with us.

Max group size - 8

Suitable for Adventure Activity instructors, Forest School leaders and outdoor education professionals seeking to develop competence in core Bushcraft skills and provide ideas, inspiration and guidelines for safe and sustainable practice in outdoor contexts. The course is packed with information, very hands-on and a great confidence booster for working with groups.

Course content:

  • The right tools for the job - selection, safe use and maintenance of knives, saws and axes. Avoiding common injuries, risk assessment and best working practice.
  • The raw materials - sustainable harvesting of useful trees and plants, coppicing, felling and splitting techniques and woodland stewardship.
  • The crafts - seasonal woodcraft techniques and projects for groups, crafting camp tools and items with form and function to take home.
  • The natural world as home - shelter systems for groups and individuals from bashas to debris shelters, breaking the ‘Hypothermia chain’ and that all important good night’s sleep.
  • The wildwood chef - wilderness food hygiene, water purification, primitive, expedition and group cooking tips, techniques and winning recipes.
  • The firestarter - the vital fire lighting skills from friction to firesteels in any weather, basic principles, fuel selection, fire types and safety, group challenges and projects for groups.
  • The knowledge - identification of native trees and plants, their uses throughout history and associated folklore. Wildlife tracking techniques, track identification and youth environmental education projects.

The course is run from an expedition base in private woodland with an emphasis on how participants might pass outdoor skills onto others in safety and confidence.
